CHANDEL, Dec 6: A 150–200 metre section of the Indo-Myanmar border fence at Changpol village in Manipur’s Chandel district was found cut, raising security concerns along the sensitive international boundary, police said on Friday.
According to officials, the breach is believed to have been carried out by unidentified miscreants on the night of December 2. Security forces discovered the damage during routine checks and immediately cordoned off the area.
An Assam Rifles officer, requesting anonymity, said the site has been secured and repair work is underway. “We are trying to identify those involved in the act,” he added.
The fencing project, undertaken by the Ministry of Home Affairs, aims to curb illegal infiltration, cross-border movement, weapons smuggling and drug trafficking. Changpol, a Kuki-Zo–inhabited village, lies barely 200 metres from the India–Myanmar border, making the breach a matter of heightened concern for security agencies monitoring the region.
