GUWAHATI, Dec 22: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said that 19 illegal immigrants apprehended from different parts of the state have been deported to Bangladesh following coordinated operations by Assam Police and the Border Security Force (BSF).

In a post on social media platform X, the Chief Minister said the individuals were detained from various locations in Nagaon and Karbi Anglong districts. Reiterating the state government’s firm stand against illegal infiltration, Sarma said the message was “crystal clear” that illegal stay in Assam would not be tolerated.

The Chief Minister, however, did not disclose the specific border point through which the deportation was carried out. He added that the state government regularly pushes back around 35 to 40 illegal immigrants every week as part of ongoing enforcement measures.

In October, the Assam cabinet approved a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) under the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act, 1950, providing clear guidelines to district administrations and senior police officials for the identification and expulsion of illegal immigrants and to curb unchecked cross-border movement.

Meanwhile, the BSF has intensified surveillance along Assam’s 1,885-kilometre-long border with Bangladesh, especially after unrest in the neighbouring country last year. Assam Police remain on high alert to prevent unauthorised entry and to repatriate individuals found without valid citizenship documents.
