AIZAWL, Dec 19: Two Myanmarese prisoners escaped from a jail in Mizoram’s Champhai district, police confirmed on Thursday. The escapees, identified as 36-year-old Vansuieni alias Suinunfeli from Tahan in Kalaymyo, Sagaing Division, and 44-year-old Lalchhanmawii from Khawmawi village in Chin State, broke out through the prison’s toilet, which was constructed with tin sheets, according to officials. Both women were under trial for drug trafficking cases.

This is not the first time Lalchhanmawii has escaped from custody. She had previously broken out of Aizawl’s Women’s Central Jail on November 30 of the previous year. She was later re-arrested on May 11 after four individuals, who were caught with heroin, revealed that they had sourced the drugs from her.

Following the escape, police have registered a case at Champhai police station and launched a search operation to track down the fugitives. The escape is a significant concern due to Champhai district’s proximity to Myanmar, raising fears of potential cross-border movements.

Authorities are working swiftly to capture the escapees and prevent any further risks associated with their flight.
