SENAPATI, March 22: A joint cleanliness drive was held today along the Senapati River as part of the ongoing ‘Clean Senapati River Campaign,’ covering an 8-kilometer stretch from Mt. Everest College parking to Kathikho Karong.

Approximately 2,000 volunteers participated in this initiative, which was aimed at reducing pollution and preserving the river for future generations. The theme of the drive, “Keep it clean, keep it flowing,” was designed to raise awareness about the importance of river conservation and pollution control.

Organized by the Senapati District Administration, the cleanliness drive targeted the densely populated areas of the Senapati HQ region. The river stretch was divided into five zones, each supervised by various officials: S. Lunguiba Thangal, MCS, SDO, Purul; Sheveine, MCS, SDO, Tadubi; Reikimdaar Khaling, MCS, SDO, Paomata; Willong, Panii James, MCS, SDO, Phaibung Chillivai; and Ningreingam Leisan, MCS, ADM, Mao. These zones were assigned the responsibility of cleaning and collecting waste, with the support of several stakeholders, including government departments, civil society organizations (CSOs), and students from schools and colleges.

Earlier in February 2025, a physical survey conducted by the ADM Senapati, CEO/ADC Senapati, KSTC, and SDSA identified several structures, including toilets and pigstys, that were directly discharging waste into the river. The survey also highlighted black spots along the river stretch, and strict warnings were issued against such practices. This initiative aims to address rampant waste disposal and raise awareness about the negative impact on the river’s health.

The Clean Senapati River Campaign is a significant effort led by the Senapati District Administration to restore and preserve the river, which is considered the lifeline of the town. It aims to control pollution, ensure the river remains a vital resource for future generations, and promote collective action among the community.

The campaign is a collaborative effort involving the District Administration, Autonomous District Council, Karong Senapati Town Committee, CSOs, village/community leaders, and volunteers. Additionally, social media is being used to spread awareness about the importance of preserving the Senapati River.
