GUWAHATI, Nov 26: Over 32,000 foreigners have been detected in Assam since the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government took office in 2021, but only 1,416 have been deported, the State Assembly was informed on Wednesday. The figures were shared by Implementation of Assam Accord Minister Atul Bora in a written reply to Congress MLA Abdur Rahim Ahmed.
According to the data, 32,207 illegal foreigners were detected between 2021 and October 31, 2025. The year-wise break-up shows 6,304 detections in 2021, 8,790 in 2022, 6,703 in 2023, 6,120 in 2024, and 4,290 in 2025. Bora underlined that as per legal procedure, only Foreigners Tribunals can declare individuals as foreigners, following which the matter may be escalated to higher courts if required.
Bora also referred to the Assam Accord, which mandates identification, deletion from electoral rolls, and deportation of all who entered Assam on or after March 25, 1971.
On border security, the minister informed the House that 228.541 km of barbed wire fencing has been completed along the India–Bangladesh border in Assam, covering sectors in Dhubri, South Salmara-Mankachar, Cachar, and Sribhumi. However, 4.35 km of fencing along the Kushiyara River in Sribhumi remains pending due to objections raised by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
