IMPHAL, Nov 2: The Department of Fisheries, Government of Manipur, hosted the 45th State-Level Fish Fair-cum-Fish Crop Competition at Hapta Kangjeibung Palace Compound in Imphal East on Saturday.
The event, which has become an annual highlight in Manipur, was inaugurated by dignitaries including Maharaja Leishemba Sanajaoba, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha), Heikham Dingo Singh, Minister of Social Welfare, Fisheries and Skill Development, along with several MLAs.

Over 180 stalls were set up, with 250 local fish farmers participating. The fair was a showcase of Manipur’s rich aquatic resources, featuring a variety of fish species such as Catla, Rohu, Mrigal, Common Carp, Grass Carp, Silver Carp, and indigenous varieties like Ukabi, Ngahei, Tunghanbi, Porom and Sareng. Beyond fish, the fair displayed an assortment of agricultural and horticultural products, as well as handloom and handicraft items made by Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from local relief camps.
This year’s Fish Fair brought together people from all walks of life, strengthening community ties and promoting support for local economies. Organized on the eve of the Ningol Chakouba festival, the event reflects the Department of Fisheries’ ongoing commitment to highlighting the importance of sustainable aquaculture and encouraging local fish farming.
