IMPHAL, Oct 8: During the Grand Finale of the 70th Wildlife Week Celebration 2024, held at the City Convention Centre in Imphal, CM N Biren Singh announced that villages not recognized or registered by the state government will not receive essential benefits, including the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), power and water supply. The weeklong celebration was organised by the Forest Department.
During his address, CM Singh emphasized the importance of sincerity among politicians and officials, urging them to be well-informed about the region’s historical context. He highlighted that many current issues stem from past mistakes and called on government officers and officials, particularly in the Revenue and Forest departments, to fulfill their responsibilities diligently, adhering to legal frameworks like The Manipur Land Revenue and Land Reforms Act and Forest Acts.

Addressing concerns related to global warming and natural disasters, CM Singh praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam Campaign” and recalled previous initiatives such as the “Green Imphal” campaign in 2004 and the “Green Manipur” mission. He stressed the need for transformative change within society to foster positive developments and affirmed the government’s commitment to protecting and conserving wildlife, forests, and water bodies in the state. Additionally, he proposed the development of a wildlife sanctuary or dedicated area and instructed the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) to explore this initiative further.
The Chief Minister commended the residents of Ukhrul district for their commitment to wildlife protection, noting their complete ban on hunting and the use of weapons. He suggested organizing campaigns for the voluntary surrender of poaching-related weapons, such as catapults and air guns, in the hill districts. Furthermore, he announced that the government would soon commence rearing Mithun for consumption to reduce hunting of wild animals.

In his presidential speech, Forest and Environment Minister Thongam Biswajit Singh highlighted the importance of raising public awareness about wildlife conservation through rallies and campaigns. He underscored the crucial role that coexistence with plants and animals plays in the survival of the human race.
The event was attended by various dignitaries, including Ministers, Member of Parliament, MLAs, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Administrative Secretaries, officials from the Forest Department, and school students.
