RIO DE JANEIRO, Nov 20: Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India’s accelerating efforts to combat climate change and share its initiatives with the Global South during his address at the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Speaking at the session on Sustainable Development and Energy Transition, PM Modi outlined India’s commitment to sustainable development, highlighting the country’s progress in fighting climate change.
Guided by its cultural values, India has already fulfilled its commitments to the Paris Climate Change Agreement ahead of schedule. “We are accelerating towards more ambitious goals in sectors like renewable energy,” PM Modi said. The Prime Minister further emphasized India’s proactive role in supporting the Global South. “India is sharing its successful initiatives with the Global South, focusing on affordable climate finance and technology access,” he stated. He pointed to India’s launch of the Global Biofuels Alliance, the promotion of the “One Sun One World One Grid” initiative, and the planting of a billion trees under the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” program as key steps in advancing global sustainability.
PM Modi also reflected on India’s comprehensive efforts over the past decade in various sectors. These include initiatives in housing, water resources, energy, and sanitation, which contribute significantly to the country’s sustainable development goals.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi reaffirmed India’s unwavering commitment to the Sustainable Development Agenda (SDA). “At the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro today, I spoke on a topic which is very important for the future of the planet—Sustainable Development and Energy Transition.
