SHILLONG, Nov 23: Dr. Mehtab Chandee Agitok Sangma, wife of Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and the National People’s Party (NPP) candidate, secured victory in the Gambegre constituency bypoll on Saturday.
Mehtab won the seat by a significant margin of 4,594 votes, defeating her closest rival, Sadhiarani Sangma of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC). Jingjang Marak of the Indian National Congress finished third in the contest.
Following the announcement of the results, the NPP took to X (formerly Twitter) to congratulate the newly elected MLA. “Congratulations to Dr. (Mrs.) Mehtab Chandee A. Sangma for winning the 56-Gambegre bypoll with an overwhelming majority and being elected as the new MLA from the constituency. The people of Gambegre today proved that they want change and development,” the party said.
The NPP also expressed gratitude for the support received during the campaign and celebrated the election outcome. “The love and blessings showered by the people of Gambegre during the campaign and after the results are really cheerful and soothing. May Gambegre witness bright days under the leadership of the new MLA Dr. (Mrs.) Mehtab Chandee A. Sangma,” the party added.
The bypoll was necessitated by the resignation of Saleng A. Sangma, the Congress MLA who stepped down earlier this year after winning the Tura Parliamentary seat.
