NEW DELHI, Nov 23: NorthEast United FC clinched a thrilling 2-1 victory over Punjab FC in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Saturday, overcoming the challenge of playing with just 10 men for the second half. The Highlanders’ early offensive burst set the tone for the match, allowing them to secure all three points.

The Highlanders struck first in the 15th minute when star striker Alaaeddine Ajaraie delivered a decisive cross into the crowded penalty area. Guillermo Fernandez was perfectly positioned to tap in the pass, giving NorthEast United a 1-0 lead. This goal galvanized the team, enabling them to create more scoring opportunities with renewed confidence.

Just three minutes later, the combination of Buanthanglun Samte and Néstor Albiach produced the second goal for NorthEast United. Samte advanced down the left flank, sending a perfectly weighted lob to Néstor, who volleyed it into the top left corner from the center of the 18-yard box, doubling the advantage for the Highlanders.

However, NorthEast United’s momentum took a hit when Dinesh Singh received a second yellow card just before halftime, leaving his team to navigate the remainder of the match a man down. Heading into the second half, head coach Juan Pedro Benali had to adjust their strategy, focusing on a tighter defense and a more deliberate build-up to limit Punjab FC’s attack.

Despite their efforts, Punjab FC managed to find a consolation goal in the 88th minute through Ivan Novoselec, who struck a right-footed shot from inside the center of the box. However, it proved to be too little, too late, as NorthEast United held on to secure the victory and valuable three points in the league standings.
