IMPHAL, Nov 26: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has initiated investigations into three major cases linked to the recent wave of violence in Manipur, according to an official statement released on Tuesday.
The NIA teams visited the crime scenes on November 21 and 22, marking the beginning of the agency’s probe into the incidents. The process of transferring case documents from the Manipur police to the NIA is currently underway.
In response to the escalating violence in the state, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) directed the NIA to expedite the investigations. As part of this, the NIA re-registered three major cases on November 13, which had initially been investigated by local authorities. The decision to transfer these cases to the NIA was made due to the severity of the offenses and the ongoing unrest in the region.
The first case under investigation involves a brutal attack on November 11 at Borobekra, where several houses were set on fire, and two civilians were killed. Militants also abducted and murdered six individuals, including three women and three children. The attack took place when armed militants fired at Borobekra police station and nearby homes and shops in Jakuradhor Karong, later setting the buildings ablaze.
Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel retaliated, resulting in an exchange of gunfire. Subsequent search operations led to the discovery of two dead bodies in the charred remains of the houses. This case has been re-registered by the NIA under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and the Arms Act, 1959.
The second case involves an attack on a CRPF post in Jakuradhor Karong and Borobekra police stations in Jiribam on November 11. Armed militants launched the assault, injuring a CRPF constable who was later evacuated to Silchar for medical treatment. During a follow-up search by the police and security forces, the bodies of several unidentified militants, along with arms and ammunition, were recovered. The NIA has re-registered this case under the BNS, 2023, and the Arms Act, 1959.
The third case pertains to the brutal murder of a woman, Zosangkim, in Jiribam on November 7. Zosangkim, a 31-year-old mother of three, was raped and burned alive by armed militants at her residence in Jairolpokpi (Zairawn). The original case was filed at the Jiribam police station on November 8. Following the transfer of the investigation, the NIA has re-registered this case under relevant sections of the BNS, 2023, Arms Act, 1959, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
