DIMAPUR, Nov 29: The Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana Gramin (PMAY-G) has made significant strides in Nagaland, with a total of 48,826 houses sanctioned under the scheme, and 19,300 already completed, according to the Ministry of Panchayats and Rural Development.

The impact of PMAY-G is particularly visible in the remote hills of Nagaland, where development initiatives often face logistical and geographical challenges. These pucca houses are not just providing shelter, but are transforming the lives of families who previously struggled with inadequate housing. The homes offer a sense of pride, safety, and belonging, as they replace makeshift shelters, the ministry stated.

Constructed on sturdy stone columns and elevated structures, the homes are designed to withstand dampness and prevent termite damage, ensuring their long-term durability. This initiative aligns with the vision for an inclusive India, where development empowers individuals and contributes to national progress, the ministry added.

In addition to providing homes, PMAY-G is fostering economic empowerment by integrating local economies into its operations. In Nagaland, beneficiaries have utilized local materials such as bamboo and lightweight concrete, which have helped reduce construction costs while also building skills and promoting self-reliance within the communities.

The scheme effectively blends tradition with modernity, ensuring that the development process respects local cultural identities. The homes in Nagaland reflect the region’s architectural heritage, with bamboo mats used on the walls and ceilings, and modern CGI sheets used for roofing. This combination of traditional elements with contemporary materials creates homes that are both functional and visually in harmony with the natural landscape.

A senior official from the Ministry of Panchayats and Rural Development highlighted that these safe and secure homes allow families to focus on improving their education, health, and livelihoods, thus paving the way for long-term generational progress.
