Mizoram: Drugs Worth Rs 11.52 Crore Destroyed by Excise and Narcotics Department

AIZAWL, Nov 30: In a significant operation, the Mizoram Excise and Narcotics department destroyed various drugs worth Rs 11.52 crore on Friday. The drugs, including heroin, methamphetamine tablets, crystal meth, and cannabis, had been seized over the past three months. The destruction took place at a farm in Phunchawng, near Aizawl, as confirmed by Excise department Joint Commissioner Peter Zohmingthanga.

The destroyed drugs included 23 kg of heroin, 15.7 kg of methamphetamine tablets, 734.7 kg of crystal meth, and 52 kg of ganja (cannabis), all of which were valued at Rs 11.52 crore in the local market. Zohmingthanga, who also serves as the chairman of the drug disposal committee, highlighted the severity of the drug abuse problem in the state.

The Excise department also reported that since January, 61 people, including 8 females, have died due to drug abuse, primarily caused by heroin consumption, underlining the urgent need for continued efforts to combat drug trafficking and addiction in Mizoram.
