IMPHAL, Dec 5: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh announced on Thursday that he has received a key piece of evidence indicating that 56-year-old Laishram Kamalbabu Singh, who has been missing for 10 days, disappeared from an army camp at Leimakhong in Kangpokpi district.
The evidence, presented by representatives of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed to address Kamalbabu’s disappearance, includes the entry signature he signed before entering the camp on November 25. Kamalbabu, a works supervisor for a contractor with the Military Engineering Services (MES), was last seen at the 57 Mountain Division Headquarters in Leimakhong, according to the JAC.
In a post on X, Singh shared details of his meeting with JAC representatives and Kamalbabu’s family, “Met the representatives of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) Against the Missing of Shri Laishram Kamalbabu and his family members, who are actively pursuing his whereabouts. Shri Kamalbabu was last seen at the 57 Mountain Division Headquarters, Leimakhong. During the meeting, the JAC members presented a key piece of evidence—the entry signature of Shri Kamalbabu, which he had signed before entering the camp.”
Singh assured the JAC of ongoing efforts to locate Kamalbabu with assistance from security forces. The JAC also expressed their desire to seek Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s intervention
Additionally, during a press conference, JAC members and Kamalbabu’s relatives voiced dissatisfaction with the current search efforts, accusing security forces of being uncooperative.
“It has been 10 days now. The silence and inaction of army authorities are deeply disturbing and add to our anguish. It is not just about the man. It is about fixing accountability and ensuring justice. We met with Chief Minister also and he has assured us all help,” said a relative of the missing man.
The Indian Army has reportedly deployed over 2,000 personnel to search for Kamalbabu. However, concerns about the lack of progress remain.
Kamalbabu, a native of Assam’s Cachar district residing in Khukrul, Imphal West, worked at the Leimakhong Military Station. The military camp is situated 16 km from Imphal in Kangpokpi district, surrounded by Kuki-dominated hill areas.
