IMPHAL, Dec 9: The Federation of Civil Societies Manipur (FOCS) has voiced strong concerns over the prolonged suspension of internet services in the state, urging the government to lift the ban due to its widespread impact on daily life.
The internet suspension was imposed following a violent incident in the Borebekra Sub-Division of Jiribam District on November 11, which resulted in the tragic killings of six people, including three women and three minors. The violence was allegedly carried out by suspected Kuki militants. In an attempt to curb the spread of misinformation and maintain law and order, the state government decided to suspend internet services in the area.
However, FOCS has highlighted the severe consequences of this internet shutdown, noting the adverse effects on both the economic and social sectors of the state. The organization stressed that internet access is crucial not only for personal communication but also for the functioning of businesses and professional work. The federation pointed out that the disruption has caused significant inconvenience for local entrepreneurs, professionals, and businesses that rely on the internet for communication, transactions, and operations.
In its press release, FOCS emphasized that the internet ban has exacerbated existing social and economic challenges in Manipur, particularly affecting key sectors such as education, healthcare, and trade. While the government views the internet suspension as a necessary measure to maintain law and order, the federation argued that it has led to unintended consequences that have further destabilized the socio-economic fabric of the state.
FOCS has made an urgent appeal to the Manipur government, urging them to lift the internet restrictions as soon as possible. The organization emphasized that the continued ban is having a negative impact on the region’s socio-economic stability and is hindering daily life in multiple critical sectors.
