GUWAHATI, Dec 13: In a disturbing turn of events, seven youths have been arrested in connection with a gang rape incident in the Nizarapar area of Garchuk, a dense jungle region in Boragaon, Kamrup Metropolitan district, Assam. The arrests followed the circulation of a harrowing video of the crime, which was brought to the attention of the authorities.
The case came to light in the early hours of the morning when journalist Dharmendra Kalita shared the video with Inspector Mayurjit Gogoi, Officer-in-Charge of Garchuk Police Station. Upon receiving the evidence, Inspector Gogoi, along with Sub-Inspector Kajal Dutta, initiated a swift search operation across Garchuk and Jalukbari areas.
As a result of the operation, police successfully identified and arrested seven individuals based on the video evidence. The arrested individuals include Kuldeep Nath (23), Bijoy Rabha (22), Pinku Das (18), Gagan Das (21), Saurav Boro (20), Mrinal Rabha (19), and Dipankar Mukhiya (21), all residents of various areas in Boragaon and Jalukbari.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Padmanabh Baruah confirmed the arrests and elaborated on the incident. He stated, “The incident occurred last month in the Nizarapar jungle area. A suo-motu case has been registered, and operations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining absconding individuals.”
The arrested youths, aged between 18 and 23, were taken into custody early this morning. Authorities have assured that the investigation is being conducted with utmost urgency to bring justice to the victim and ensure that all perpetrators are held accountable for their actions.
