ISI, Chinese & US Agents in Bangladesh: BSF Tightens Vigil on Border

GUWAHATI, Jan 4: The uncertain political scenario in Bangladesh, coupled with the increased activities of Pakistani, Chinese, and US agencies in the country, has put the Border Security Force (BSF) on high alert. While the situation along the India-Bangladesh border remains normal, the BSF is closely monitoring the evolving situation. A senior BSF official mentioned that various intelligence wings are aware of the activities of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) in Bangladesh, including meetings between ISI operatives and Bangladeshi officials, with Chinese and US agents also allegedly involved.

Despite maintaining a cordial relationship with its counterpart, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), the BSF is keeping a close watch on the activities in the region. “We do not have clear information about what these agencies are up to, though we do have some information,” the BSF official said. The official also raised concerns over insurgent groups based in northeastern India, particularly in Bangladesh, as these camps—once considered redundant—are now reportedly active again.

One such concern is the presence of the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) in Bangladesh, which operates with suspected support from ISI elements. While it is still unclear whether militants are being trained with the help of Bangladesh, this development has prompted serious concerns. “We cannot say anything for certain at this moment as the picture is still hazy,” the BSF official added.

The intelligence wings are aware of ISI’s activities in Bangladesh, but the scope and nature of its newfound alliances with other international agencies are still under examination. However, there is limited information available on the role of Chinese and US agencies. The BSF has described the situation as fluid and uncertain, stating that extra caution is necessary.

The uncertainty in Bangladesh has led to the postponement of BSF-BGB Director General-level meetings for at least two months. Other bilateral meetings have also been delayed. The next IG-level meeting with the BSF is scheduled to take place in Bangladesh, but the BSF official emphasized that a comprehensive security audit will be conducted before any future meetings with the BGB.
