IMPHAL, Feb 5: Manipur police, in a series of operations on February 4, arrested four active militants belonging to different banned outfits from the Imphal and Bishnupur districts. These arrests were made in connection with their involvement in extortion activities targeting the general public, government officials, and business owners.
Two members of the Kangleipak Communist Party – Progressive Wing Group (KCP – PWG), identified as Ningthoujam Jupiter Singh (27) and Sorokhaibam Amarjit Singh (28), were arrested from Mahabali under Porompat-PS, Imphal East. The duo had been extorting money from various individuals and entities in the greater Imphal area. Authorities recovered a range of items from their possession, including one M20 pistol loaded with five live rounds, a two-wheeler, a sling bag, and two mobile phones.
In a separate operation, one member of the United National Liberation Front (UNLF), Lourembam Mani Singh (46), was arrested from Takyel Kolom Leikai under Lamphel-PS, Imphal West. He was found involved in extorting money from various government offices in the Imphal area. Police recovered a mobile phone, a two-wheeler, a black wallet containing an Aadhaar card, and Rs. 4,270 in cash from his possession.
The third operation led to the arrest of Pukhrambam Prem Singh (47), a member of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), who had been extorting significant amounts of money from the public, businessmen, and government officials in the Nambol, Bishnupur, and Ningthoukhong areas. Authorities seized three mobile phones, a wallet with a PAN card and Aadhaar card from him.
In addition to the arrests, the police continued to carry out search operations and area domination exercises across vulnerable regions in both hill and valley districts of Manipur. Security forces ensured the movement of 305 vehicles along NH-2 and 221 vehicles along NH-37, transporting essential items, and deployed strict security measures to safeguard these routes. A total of 110 Nakas/Checkpoints were established across various districts, ensuring a heightened security presence. Despite the increased checkpoints, no individuals were detained by the police.
