IMPHAL, Feb 6: In a significant drug trafficking bust, a joint team of security forces intercepted a truck carrying a large quantity of codeine-based cough syrup in Jiribam district. The operation, which took place around 4:00 PM on Wednesday, was conducted at a NAKA checkpoint by a combined team comprising the Special Mobile Patrol Unit (SMPU) of Jiribam District Police, led by SI A. Krishna Sharma, alongside personnel from the 38 Assam Rifles (Kadamtala, Jiribam) and QAT teams from the 87 and 156 Battalions of CRPF.
During the operation, the team flagged down a truck with registration number AS03CC-0252. Upon inspection, authorities discovered 1,560 bottles of WINCEREX cough syrup, each containing codeine phosphate, concealed in 13 different boxes. The consignment was seized following legal formalities, and the truck driver, identified as Maibam Premjit Singh (52), was arrested. He is the son of M. Ibomcha Singh from Nongpok Sekmai, Hijam Khunou, Thoubal District, Manipur.
The truck and the seized items, along with the arrested individual, were handed over to the Jiribam Police Station for further investigation. A case has been registered under FIR No. 06(02) 2025 JBM PS, under sections 21(b) and 60(3) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (ND&PS) Act.
