IMPHAL, Feb 8: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh reaffirmed his government’s dedication to restoring peace in the state, which has been grappling with ethnic violence since May 2023. On Saturday, Singh emphasized that his government is making every possible effort to restore harmony and ensure that the people of Manipur can live together peacefully as they did before the violence.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the DGAR Men & Women Polo Championship 2025, Singh expressed appreciation for the Army and the Assam Rifles, recognizing their role in organizing various tournaments. He highlighted that these events would contribute to promoting polo and safeguarding the traditional ponies of Manipur.
Singh also called for the support and cooperation of the people in preserving the ponies and mentioned that the government had launched several schemes to protect these animals. He reiterated that modern polo has its roots in Manipur. To help with this, the government has allocated a grazing ground of around 30 acres at Lamphelpat, along with other grazing grounds developed in various districts, including one at Pangei in Imphal East.
Further emphasizing the cultural heritage, Singh introduced an indigenous polo tournament called the Chief Minister’s Sagol Kangjei Championship, aimed at preserving and promoting Sagol Kangjei, the traditional horseback ball sport of the state.
