Nagaland’s Meluri Officially Inaugurated as the 17th District of the State

MELURI, Feb 22: Meluri was officially inaugurated as Nagaland’s 17th district by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio during a ceremony held on February 21, at a public ground in Kohima. This new district, which was previously an Additional Deputy Commission headquarters in Phek district, was upgraded to full district status on November 2, 2024.

The inauguration ceremony was organized by the Pochury Hoho, the apex tribal body, in collaboration with the district administration, with Chief Minister Rio as the special guest. The event saw the participation of several ministers, legislators, Naga tribal leaders, and thousands of Pochury people. As part of the inaugural event, Rio unveiled the foundation monolith and inaugurated a multi-purpose sports complex.

In his address, Rio congratulated the Pochury people on receiving their own district and stated that the occasion marked the beginning of a new chapter of growth, development, and progress for the region. He also acknowledged the support of the Chakhesang Public Organisation (CPO), the apex body of Phek district, for their role in recommending the formation of the district and issuing the “No Objection Certificate” for its creation. Rio urged both the Pochury and Chakhesang tribes to continue fostering unity and brotherhood with the rest of the Naga community.

The Chief Minister highlighted Meluri’s significant potential, noting its 34 villages spread over 1,011 square kilometers, rich biodiversity, and abundant natural and mineral resources. He also mentioned the region’s cultural heritage, Shilloi Lake, Tizu River, and the International Trade Centre at Avakhung, as important assets. Rio emphasized that the government would focus on the district’s development but called for active participation from the local population to ensure its sustainable progress.

He further noted Meluri’s strategic geographical advantage due to its proximity to Myanmar and stated that the government was working on projects to enhance trade and connectivity with the neighboring country through the establishment of inland waterways.

In conclusion, Rio urged everyone to work together with hard work, unity, and community spirit to achieve lasting peace, prosperity, and development for the newly formed district of Meluri.
