ITANAGAR, Feb 26: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Wednesday emphasized the importance of festivals in preserving cultural heritage during his address at the first ‘Joint Mega Nyokum Yullo’ festival in Boasimla, Kamle district, Arunachal Pradesh.
Dhankhar, alongside Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, attended the inaugural function of this vibrant festival, celebrated by the Nyishi community. The Vice President highlighted how the diverse culture and traditions of Arunachal Pradesh, and the broader northeastern region, attract and enlighten people across the entire country.
Speaking about the role of festivals in maintaining cultural identity, Dhankhar remarked that the Nyokum Yullo festival is crucial in preserving the rich cultural heritage of the community. He also noted India’s rapid progress, asserting that the nation is the fastest-growing country globally, citing advancements in economic growth, infrastructure, and social welfare. He pointed to Arunachal Pradesh’s hydropower potential, estimating the state could generate 50,000 MW of electricity, a prospect that could bring massive investment of Rs. 5 lakh crore in the state’s hydropower sector.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju also addressed the gathering, emphasizing the transformative changes in Arunachal Pradesh under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. Rijiju spoke about the completion of the Trans-Arunachal Highway, which will soon connect every district headquarters in the state. He also highlighted the government’s approval of the Rs. 42,000 crore Frontier Highway project, which is expected to further boost the state’s infrastructure.
The Nyokum Yullo festival, an important agricultural event for the Nyishi community, is celebrated with fervor to seek blessings for a prosperous harvest and overall well-being. It also promotes unity, solidarity, and the preservation of the community’s cultural heritage, strengthening their sense of pride and belonging.
During the festival, Vice President Dhankhar felicitated Miss Kabak Yano, the first woman from the Nyishi community to summit Mount Everest. He also inaugurated a multipurpose indoor hall at Boasimla in Kamle district. The ceremony was attended by Union Minister Rijiju, Nyishi community leaders, and other dignitaries.
