IMPHAL, March 6: As the deadline for the general amnesty in Manipur approaches, a total of 858 firearms have been voluntarily surrendered by civilians across the state. The amnesty program, launched by Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, aims to promote disarmament and bring peace to the region, which has been marred by unrest.
On Wednesday, as the deadline drew nearer, 32 different types of weapons were handed over, contributing to the growing number of weapons surrendered under the initiative. The firearms were surrendered at designated drop points in districts such as Churachandpur, Imphal East, and Kangpokpi.
The scale of the voluntary surrender has been notable, with recovered weapons displayed at police stations across the state. However, for security reasons, the names of those who surrendered the weapons have not been released. Local officials report that the response to the amnesty has been significant, reflecting a positive shift toward disarmament.
Governor Bhalla has issued a stern warning, stating that after the amnesty period concludes, those found in illegal possession of firearms will face strict legal consequences. The program has had a considerable impact on reducing arms in the region, although the government remains focused on maintaining peace and stability moving forward.
