AIZAWL, March 6: In a significant development, two pro-democracy rebel groups based in Myanmar have announced their merger to form the Chin National Council. The agreement between the Chinland Council and the Interim Chin National Consultative Council (ICNCC) was signed in Mizoram’s capital, Aizawl, on February 27, 2025.
The merger is expected to have far-reaching implications for the ongoing conflict in Myanmar, with both groups having long been advocating for greater autonomy and rights for the Chin ethnic group. The formation of the Chin National Council marks a unified front in their struggle against the Myanmar military junta.
Mizoram’s Chief Minister, Lalduhoma, and local leaders were present at the ceremony, signaling the importance of the event. The gathering also raised questions about India’s position, as the country shares a border with Myanmar and has been a key player in regional diplomacy.
The signing ceremony was attended by representatives of both groups, including the Chinland Council’s armed wing, the Chin National Army, and the Chin Brotherhood, the armed faction of the ICNCC. These armed wings have been engaged in various operations in Myanmar’s Chin state, and their merger is likely to strengthen their efforts against the Myanmar military.
