SENAPATI, March 8: The Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) has announced an indefinite shutdown across all Kuki-Zo areas starting midnight on March 8, 2025, in response to the state government’s decision to send Meitei people into Kuki-Zo areas.

In a press release issued today, the KZC condemned the recent actions of the state government to send Meitei people into Kuki-Zo areas, despite ample warnings against such movements, which have now escalated tensions in the region.

Violent confrontations have erupted in numerous locations, primarily between security forces escorting the buses and the protesters. “This alarming situation has led to the death of Mr. Lalgun Singsit of Keithelmanbi and significant injuries among women participating in these demonstrations. At least one individual has been confirmed dead from gunfire by security forces while two others are hospitalized in critical condition, raising significant concerns about the use of force in this context. Moreover, over 50 women have suffered serious injuries, highlighting security forces’ excesses on the community. The security personnel employed forceful measures, which has only intensified the protesters’ resolve,” the statement read.

The Kuki-Zo Council expressed its strong condemnation of the government’s decision to impose the “free movement” initiative, arguing that the government was fully aware of the potential for violence but chose to move forward with the action. “Real peace is built on mutual respect and understanding. Forcing peace upon unwilling parties can lead to resentment and further conflict, undermining the very goal of harmony,” the KZC stated.

The Kuki-Zo Council called for the central government to address the underlying issues contributing to the unrest to prevent further violence. They urged the government to reconsider its stance to avoid further escalation of tension and further confrontation.

The KZC further declared that the indefinite shutdown would remain in effect until a political solution is reached for the Kuki-Zo community. The council also issued a strong warning, stating that it “cannot guarantee the free movement of Meiteis across buffer zones” and would not be responsible for any untoward incidents.
