IMPHAL, March 12: In a significant development for peace efforts in Manipur, Advisor to the Ministry of Home Affairs (North East), AK Mishra, led two crucial meetings in the state—one with representatives of the Federation of Civil Society (FOCS), Manipur, in Imphal and another with Kuki-Zo leaders in Churachandpur.
While the discussions with FOCS were considered productive, the meeting with Kuki-Zo leaders ended without any concrete resolutions.
During the meeting with FOCS in Imphal, spokesperson Ngangbam Chamcham Singh informed the media that Mishra provided a reassuring update on the implementation of the peace roadmap. He confirmed that the initiative had already entered its first phase, which focuses on the surrender of weapons, the reopening of roads, and addressing the activities of armed groups.
Additionally, Mishra clarified the status of the Suspension of Operation (SoO) agreement, stating that while it had lapsed, it had not been abrogated and would be revisited soon. The meeting also included discussions on the Governor’s appeal for weapon surrender, which had been extended following directives from Union Home Minister Amit Shah. FOCS representatives expressed satisfaction with the outlined steps and Mishra’s commitment to addressing key concerns.
However, the meeting with Kuki-Zo leaders in Churachandpur, which lasted nearly three hours, proved to be less productive. Discussions focused on the recent Kangpokpi issue, Free Movement, the demand for a Separate Administration UT, and the cessation of hostilities, among other district-specific concerns.
Despite extensive deliberations, Kuki-Zo leaders remained firm on their stance, and no significant progress was made. Mishra and his team maintained their position, but the discussions ended in a deadlock, with no concrete decisions reached.
While the meeting with FOCS was marked by positive developments and mutual understanding, the talks with Kuki-Zo leaders highlighted persisting differences.
