NEW DELHI, March 15: In a significant move to safeguard consumer safety, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has initiated a crackdown on e-commerce platforms selling unsafe, non-certified products. The BIS carried out search and seizure operations at various warehouse locations of prominent platforms like Amazon and Flipkart in cities including Lucknow, Gurugram, and Delhi.
The crackdown is part of BIS’s ongoing efforts to address the sale of non-certified products that do not meet the mandatory safety and quality standards. Surveillance revealed that multiple products sold on these platforms lacked BIS certification, including those without the ISI Mark or those with an invalid ISI Mark. These non-certified products are considered a potential safety hazard as they have not undergone independent third-party testing to meet minimum safety and performance standards.
BIS has emphasized the importance of consumer awareness in making informed purchasing decisions. It has urged shoppers to use the BIS Care app, which provides valuable information about products requiring mandatory BIS certification. The app enables users to verify the authenticity of the ISI Mark and the associated manufacturer’s license number. Additionally, consumers can report any non-compliant products or file complaints about BIS-certified products that do not meet expected standards.
The Bureau is continuing its market surveillance to ensure compliance with safety regulations, holding e-commerce platforms accountable for the products they sell and ensuring that they meet national standards for consumer safety.
