NEW DELHI, March 20: In a significant move towards strengthening India’s defense capabilities and self-reliance, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the acquisition of India-made Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) worth Rs 7,000 crore. The ATAGS, developed indigenously by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in collaboration with private industry partners, is set to significantly enhance the operational capabilities of the Indian Armed Forces.
The ATAGS is India’s first indigenously designed, developed, and manufactured 155 mm artillery gun, marking a milestone in the country’s defense sector. With a long 52-caliber barrel, it offers an extended firing range of up to 40 km, making it a game-changer in artillery systems. The system’s larger caliber ensures higher lethality and greater explosive payloads, while its automated deployment and target engagement features reduce crew fatigue.
This acquisition is part of India’s push for ‘Make in India’ in defense manufacturing and technological advancement, as the ATAGS will replace outdated 105 mm and 130 mm guns. With over 65% of its components sourced domestically, including critical subsystems such as the barrel, muzzle brake, breech mechanism, and ammunition handling system, the ATAGS minimizes reliance on foreign imports.
The system’s deployment along India’s western and northern borders will provide the Indian Army with enhanced strategic capabilities, ensuring improved operational readiness and firepower. The manufacturing of ATAGS will also generate approximately 20 lakh man-days of employment across various sectors, contributing to the country’s economic growth.
Furthermore, this development is expected to boost India’s position in the global defense export market, as it strengthens the country’s self-sufficiency in defense technology and reduces dependence on foreign suppliers. The approval and subsequent induction of ATAGS into the Indian Armed Forces signify a major leap toward achieving long-term defense self-reliance, with a focus on innovation and indigenous manufacturing.
