SENAPATI, March 20: The Naga People’s Organization (NPO) has expressed concern over the continued insistence by some government offices requiring Aadhaar as the sole proof of identity, despite a recent Supreme Court ruling that clarified Aadhaar is not mandatory for accessing essential government services or for booking parcels within India.
The Supreme Court’s ruling emphasizes that while Aadhaar remains constitutionally valid, it should not be the exclusive identification method. Citizens are entitled to use other government-issued IDs as valid proof of identity. The Court further clarified that no individual should be forced to provide Aadhaar where it is not legally required.
Key aspects of the ruling highlighted by the NPO include:
- Aadhaar Not Mandatory for Essential Services: Aadhaar cannot be made compulsory for accessing essential government services, and other forms of ID must be accepted.
- Aadhaar Not Required for Sending Parcels: The ruling confirmed that Aadhaar is not necessary for booking parcels within India. Other valid IDs can be used for verification.
- Private Entities and Aadhaar: Private companies cannot demand Aadhaar for their services.
- Security Purposes: Certain cases, like international parcels, may require ID for security, but Aadhaar is not mandatory.
In light of this ruling, the NPO urges government offices to respect the Court’s decision and ensure that citizens are not unjustly forced to present Aadhaar where other IDs are valid.”
The NPO encourages the public to report any instances of forced Aadhaar submission and remains committed to upholding citizens’ rights.
