GUWAHATI, March 24: BCCI General Secretary Devajit Saikia announced on Sunday that Guwahati will become the first Test cricket venue in the northeast region when India takes on South Africa later this year. This historic move will see the city host its first-ever Test match as part of the second match of the two-match Test series, set to take place at the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) Stadium from November 22 to 26, 2025.
In addition to the Test match, Guwahati will also host its first-ever World Cup match during the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup later this year. Saikia confirmed that the ACA Stadium will be one of the venues for the tournament, which will take place from September 24 to November 2, 2025, with Guwahati scheduled to host five to six matches. This will mark the first time that World Cup cricket matches will be played in the northeast.
“No Test and World Cup matches have been played in Guwahati so far. But, as per the decision taken at the BCCI apex council meeting on Saturday, Guwahati will host both those matches this year,” Saikia stated. He further highlighted that the Test match against South Africa would place Guwahati on the map as a Test cricket venue, marking a significant milestone for the region.
Saikia expressed his gratitude to ICC Chairman Jay Shah and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for their support in making Guwahati a preferred cricket venue. This announcement has generated immense excitement among cricket enthusiasts in the region, as it promises to boost both the sport’s infrastructure and the profile of Guwahati as a major cricket destination in India.
