SHILLONG, March 25: In a breathtaking fusion of tradition, nature, and well-being, yoga enthusiasts gathered at the iconic Double Decker Living Root Bridge in Meghalaya for a one-of-a-kind yoga session ahead of International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2025. Organized by the North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda and Homoeopathy (NEIAH), the event aimed to highlight the deep connection between yoga and nature, as per a statement from the Ministry of AYUSH.
Set amid misty hills, cascading waterfalls, and the ancient roots of rubber fig trees, the Living Root Bridge provided the perfect venue to practice yoga. A UNESCO World Heritage contender, this living marvel—woven entirely from aerial roots—symbolizes resilience and harmony with nature, qualities that mirror the essence of yoga itself.
Participants in the session emphasized that this was more than just a yoga event; it was a tribute to the spirit of sustainability, patience, and balance. The bridge, crafted and strengthened by generations of Khasi artisans, embodies the same endurance and adaptability that yoga fosters in human lives.
Since the United Nations declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga in 2014, India has hosted yoga events at historic landmarks such as the Taj Mahal, Konark Sun Temple, Red Fort, and Gateway of India. With this session at the Living Root Bridge, Meghalaya has now joined this distinguished list, further showcasing India’s commitment to holistic well-being and environmental harmony.
