Financial Frauds Dominate Cybercrime Cases in Mizoram, Reveals Official Report

AIZAWL, April 7: Financial fraud has emerged as the most prevalent form of cybercrime in Mizoram, accounting for over half of the cases registered in the state between January 2020 and March 11, 2025. According to data from the state cybercrime police station, 181 out of 321 reported cybercrime incidents—56.38 percent—involved financial fraud, primarily in the form of online banking scams and impersonation-based cheating.

The report also noted several other cyber offences during the same period. These included 32 cases of identity theft, 16 involving child pornography, nine related to social media harassment, seven of copyright infringement, five incidents of spreading false rumours, and one case of hacking.

The year 2022 saw the highest number of financial fraud cases with 107 reports registered, marking a peak in cybercrime activity in Mizoram. In the same year, the state recorded its highest annual tally of cybercrimes overall, with 158 cases. This figure dropped significantly to 72 in 2023 and further to 41 in 2024.

In 2024, among the 41 registered cybercrime cases, 17 were related to financial crimes and 15 involved sexual harassment. In the current year up to March 11, 13 cases have been reported so far, six of which pertain to sexual harassment and four to financial fraud.

Law enforcement has made notable progress in handling these crimes. Between 2021 and March 11, 2025, a total of 113 individuals were arrested in connection with cybercrime, including eight juveniles. Of these, 40 individuals were convicted. Additionally, more than Rs 1.42 crore was recovered from financial fraud cases during this period.
