NEW DELHI, April 12: In an unprecedented move aimed at restoring peace and stability in violence-hit Manipur, the central government has deputed a record 16 Indian Police Service (IPS) officers from the 2024 batch to the northeastern state. This marks the highest-ever single-year deployment of IPS officers to Manipur, signaling the Centre’s determined push to strengthen law enforcement in the region.

The announcement was made by the Ministry of Home Affairs and reported by India TV, noting that Manipur topped all states and union territories in terms of IPS postings under the cadre allocation process of the Civil Services Examination 2023.

The deployment comes in the wake of persistent ethnic unrest and sporadic violence that have plagued Manipur since May 2023. These fresh officers are expected to reinforce administrative capacity, enhance intelligence coordination, and improve ground-level policing, particularly in vulnerable and conflict-prone areas.

A senior official from the Ministry stated, “This historic posting reflects the Centre’s deep commitment to restoring normalcy in Manipur. These young officers will be instrumental in rebuilding trust, ensuring effective governance, and maintaining law and order.”

Official records highlight the scale of this shift: no IPS officers were posted to Manipur in 2018, only two in 2019, one in 2020, and three in 2021. The current figure represents a strategic leap in administrative deployment to combat unrest and re-establish effective policing.
