IMPHAL, April 18: Violent clashes erupted on Thursday in Manipur’s Ukhrul district over a long-standing land dispute, resulting in the death of a 36-year-old man and injuries to five others, officials confirmed on Friday.
The confrontation broke out around 2 PM between residents of Shangching village and Lungreiphung Tang village, according to local sources. Amidst the chaos, Ramyon RK (36), son of Ramlung RK of Shangching village, sustained critical injuries and later succumbed to them.
Sources reported that during the intense conflict, five others sustained bullet injuries. The injured include Aron RK (36), Joseph RK (54), and Peter RK (73) from Shangching village, and Rejoice RK (34) and Ningshang RK (60) from Lungreiphung Tang.
In response to the incident, the district administration has imposed an indefinite curfew across the entire disputed area. Additional District Magistrate Polly Makan issued a prohibitory order under Sub-Section 1 of Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, effective from 2:30 PM on April 17, 2025, and until further notice.
The order strictly prohibits individuals from leaving their homes or engaging in any activities that could threaten the prevailing law and order within the affected areas.
To prevent further violence and restore peace, the authorities have deployed adequate security forces to the region.
