KANGPOKPI, May 5: The Manipur Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) following an alleged “gun salute” incident that took place in the Saikul area of Kangpokpi district, raising eyebrows and stirring fresh concerns over law and order in the region.
As per police sources, the gun salute was reportedly carried out by a group of individuals to pay homage to those who lost their lives during the ethnic violence that broke out in the state two years ago. The act, however, has not gone down well with the authorities, who are now taking the matter seriously.
On Saturday, both Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities observed the second anniversary of the conflict by organising commemorative events in various parts of the state. While most of the programmes were held peacefully, the alleged gun salute in Saikul has ruffled feathers.
The police in a statement said local leaders and elders were summoned to a police station in connection with the gun salute incident while raids had been conducted at different areas to arrest the miscreants.
Authorities have reiterated that law and order is paramount, and any act that disturbs public peace will be dealt with firmly.
