IMPHAL, May 23: Manipur MLA Vungzagin Valte has clarified that the Zomi Cultural Flag, recently seen during a Passing Out Parade at the Assam Rifles Training Centre in Sukovi, Nagaland, is not associated with any insurgent activity. The statement comes in response to controversy and criticism surrounding the flag’s presence at the May 17, 2025, event

Addressing to the Director General of Assam Rifles in a letter dated May 22, Valte urged authorities not to take disciplinary action over the display of the flag. He explained that the Zomi Cultural Flag was officially adopted in 2019 by Zomi leaders during a global convention held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, representing the 9 tribes/communities under the Zomi nomenclature in Manipur since the Zomi was recognised by the state government declaring Zomi Nam Ni as a Restricted Holiday.

“The Zomi Cultural Flag is not an insurgent’s flag as alleged by someone with vested interests,” Valte wrote in the letter.

“However due to ignorance, some well-wishers may have photographed on that very day to show their appreciation,” the letter continued.

“I kindly request that you do not initiate disciplinary action based on this matter,” the MLA concluded.
