GUWAHATI, June 14: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a chargesheet against three individuals, including United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) chief Paresh Baruah, in connection with a conspiracy to execute multiple IED blasts across Assam on Independence Day last year.

According to an official statement released on Saturday, the NIA named Baruah—who also goes by aliases such as Paresh Asom, Kamruj Zaman Khan, Zaman Bhai, Pradip, and Paban Baruah—along with Abhijit Gogoi alias Abhijeet Gogoi, and Jahnu Boruah alias Arnob Asom alias Huntu, in the chargesheet submitted to a special court in Guwahati on Friday.

Baruah, based in Myanmar, is the self-styled Commander-in-Chief and chairman of the proscribed outfit ULFA (I). The trio has been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), and the Explosive Substances Act.

The NIA investigation revealed that the accused were involved in the planting of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) at Dispur Last Gate in Guwahati as part of a broader plan by ULFA (I) to disrupt the Independence Day celebrations in 2023. The conspiracy, according to the agency, aimed to inflict casualties, destroy public property, and instill fear, thereby threatening the unity, integrity, and sovereignty of India.

The central agency took over the case in September 2024 and has since gathered evidence linking the accused to the IED plot, designed to cause mass disruption and terror across the region.
