10 Northeast Universities Ranked Among India’s Top 50 in IIRF 2025 Rankings

IMPHAL, June 16: Ten universities from Northeast India have secured positions in the top 50 of the Indian Institutional Ranking Framework (IIRF) 2025, underscoring the region’s growing academic excellence and institutional development.

Leading the list from the region is Rajiv Gandhi University, Itanagar, which has maintained its strong standing at 13th place, consistent with its 2024 performance. Tezpur University follows at 24th, down from 16th last year, while Mizoram University is ranked 25th, marking a drop from 15th in 2024. Central Agricultural University, Imphal, and North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong, are placed at 26th and 29th respectively.

Other universities from the region that made the top 50 include:

  • Sikkim University (36th)
  • Assam University (37th)
  • Manipur University (40th)
  • Tripura University (44th, up from 47th)

While several institutions witnessed a dip in their rankings, the inclusion of all eight northeastern states in the top 50 reflects consistent regional academic progress.

In the private university category, Sikkim Manipal University, Gangtok, is the only northeastern institution to be placed within the top 50, securing 24th position. Several others were featured in the top 100, including:

  • Martin Luther Christian University, Shillong (62nd)
  • William Carey University, Shillong (67th)
  • University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM), Ri Bhoi (77th)
  • Assam Don Bosco University (83rd)
  • The Assam Kaziranga University (84th)
  • Sikkim Professional University (85th)
  • Assam Down Town University (90th)
  • North East Frontier Technical University, Arunachal Pradesh (95th)

Established in 2016, the IIRF has become one of India’s most credible benchmarks for evaluating higher education institutions. The 2025 rankings assessed over 2,500 institutions, including 500+ universities, using a transparent methodology that emphasizes industry feedback and workforce alignment.
