AIZAWL, June 20: Union Minister of State for Road, Transport & Highways, Harsh Malhotra, on Friday hailed the infrastructure revolution in Northeast India, stating that nearly 10,000 km of National Highways have been constructed in the region over the past 11 years. Built at a cost of over ₹1.07 lakh crore, these projects have significantly enhanced connectivity to remote and border areas, laying the groundwork for long-term economic growth.

Speaking at the 233rd Mid-Term Council Meeting of the Indian Roads Congress (IRC) held at the Mizoram University Campus, Malhotra described infrastructure as more than just “concrete and steel.” He emphasized its role as the “foundation of economic growth,” aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a developed India—Viksit Bharat—by 2047.

Malhotra highlighted that the length of National Highways in India has increased by over 60%—from 91,000 km in 2014 to approximately 1.47 lakh km in 2025. He called for the adoption of globally proven technologies to ensure cost-effective construction without compromising quality, while also advocating for eco-friendly and sustainable practices in road development.

The minister praised the Indian Roads Congress for playing a pivotal role in standardizing highway construction through its codes, guidelines, and safety regulations. He noted that road and bridge works under the National Highway Development Programme are carried out in strict adherence to IRC standards.

Malhotra concluded by reiterating the Centre’s commitment to transforming infrastructure in the Northeast, positioning it as a key driver of national growth and regional prosperity.
