KOHIMA, June 24: Over 2,000 Catholic youths from across the Northeastern region are set to assemble in Kohima for the 5th Regional Catholic Youth Convention, scheduled from June 27 to 30 at the newly renovated Mary Help of Christians Cathedral.
Organised by the North Eastern Regional Youth Commission of the Indian Catholic Youth Movement (NERYC – ICYM NE), the event is themed ‘Pilgrims of Hope’ and is being hosted by the Nagaland Catholic Youth Movement (NCYM). The convention is expected to be a vibrant and unifying platform for young Catholics from the region’s 15 dioceses, spread under three archdioceses, with the Catholic population in Northeast India exceeding 1.5 million.
Most Rev. Dr. James Thoppil, Bishop of Kohima and chief patron of the youth movement, highlighted the theme of unity in diversity within the Church. He expressed hope that the gathering would strengthen bonds among the youth and encourage renewed commitment to faith and service.
Father Kokto Kurien, Youth Director of the Diocese of Kohima, noted the anticipated strong participation from all dioceses, underscoring the growing enthusiasm among youth for spiritual and social engagement.
The event will open on June 27 with a grand ceremony including a procession, flag hoisting, blessing of diocesan stalls, and a holy mass. Regional Youth Director of ICYM, Father John Burman, added that the opening day would also feature cultural performances that reflect the diverse tribal heritage of Northeast India.

Church dignitaries expected at the event include Archbishop Victor Lyngdoh of Shillong, Archbishop John Moolachira of Guwahati, and Bishop Linus Neli, Chairman of NERYC.
During the four-day convention, attendees will participate in a series of sessions focusing on faith, leadership development, youth empowerment, and the responsible use of social media. The event will also address critical issues like substance abuse among young people in the region.
