SHILLONG, June 28: Meghalaya’s flagship tourism event, the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival, has brought laurels to the state by winning two prestigious gold awards from Wow Asia, a renowned platform that honours excellence in the events and experiential marketing industry across Asia.
The 2024 edition of the festival clinched the gold award in the “Special Event of the Year – Government” category, recognising its remarkable execution as a government-led initiative. It also bagged another gold in the “Festival of the Year (Culture in Full Bloom)” category, highlighting the celebration’s rich cultural vibrancy and growing international appeal.
Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh, speaking on Friday, lauded the recognition as a milestone for the state’s tourism sector. “These awards are tangible outcomes of the festivals organised by the state government, especially the Cherry Blossom Festival,” he said, adding that the accolades reaffirm Meghalaya’s commitment to showcasing its cultural heritage and natural beauty on the global stage.
Lyngdoh further stated that the awards are expected to enhance the state’s visibility as a premier tourism destination, attracting more domestic and international visitors to the scenic hill state known for its unique blend of tradition, music, cuisine, and blooming cherry blossoms.
The Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival, held annually during the full bloom of the pink cherry blossom trees, has rapidly emerged as one of Northeast India’s most anticipated cultural celebrations. Featuring music, art, fashion, food, and eco-tourism, the event has become a vibrant platform for local talent and global cultural exchange.
The dual recognition from Wow Asia is being seen as not only a celebration of effective event management but also a tribute to Meghalaya’s growing stature in India’s tourism landscape.
