DHARAMSHALA, July 5: The spiritual town of Dharamshala resonated with prayers, colours, and celebration on Saturday as Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu joined hundreds of devotees to mark the 90th birthday celebrations of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.

Held at the Tsuglagkhang Temple, the Dalai Lama’s official residence, the ceremony saw an outpouring of reverence from followers and dignitaries alike. Both Rijiju and Khandu were welcomed with traditional Tibetan hospitality and offered their respects to the Nobel Peace Laureate, widely regarded as a global symbol of compassion, wisdom, and peace.

Taking to social media, CM Pema Khandu shared his reflections from the occasion, writing, “A special day in Dharamshala, where people from all walks of life came together for the Long Life Offering (Tenshug) to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. With heartfelt prayers and traditional offerings, we expressed our collective gratitude and admiration for his enduring guidance.”

Although the Dalai Lama officially turns 90 on July 6 as per the Gregorian calendar, the celebrations began earlier on June 30, in keeping with the Tibetan lunar calendar. The week-long festivities have included traditional rituals, cultural performances, and community events centred around the Tsuglagkhang complex in Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district.

The Dalai Lama’s birthday is not just a celebration of a personal milestone, but a deeply spiritual event for Tibetan Buddhists and followers worldwide. As the revered leader enters his 10th decade, the ceremonies underscore the deep affection and admiration he commands across communities and generations.

His Holiness is considered the living embodiment of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, and continues to inspire millions around the world with his message of non-violence, inner peace, and universal responsibility.
