CHURACHANDPUR, July 10: Continuous heavy rains since the afternoon of July 8 have triggered a flood-like situation across Churachandpur district in Manipur, causing widespread damage and displacing several families. The downpour, which persisted overnight and continued through the following day, has led to the swelling of major rivers and inundation of multiple low-lying areas.
The Tuitha River, also known as the Khuga River, has breached the danger mark, flooding 115 houses across Neihsial Veng, Kerith, Zoumunnuam, PCI Colony, New Zouveng, and Nazareth. Residents have taken shelter in nearby community centres as water levels continue to rise. The swollen river has reached the level of the suspension bridge at Zoumunnuam village, signalling the potential threat to critical infrastructure.
In addition, the Lanva River has overflowed, flooding several villages between Pearsonmun and Mualkoi. Major locations, including the arterial Tedim Road and Tuibong Market, are currently under water, severely affecting transport and commercial activities.
Neng-thawng Veng, Kerith Veng, and Khan-thang Veng under the TD Block have been severely hit, with homes submerged and residents displaced. Large stretches of agricultural land have also been damaged, compounding the crisis for local farmers.
The Inter Village Road (IVR) that connects these villages to Churachandpur town has been completely submerged and is at high risk of erosion, effectively cutting off access to the affected areas. Authorities have been alerted, and efforts are underway to monitor the situation and provide necessary relief.
