New Delhi, July 22: Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar has officially resigned from his post, citing health concerns and the need to adhere to medical advice. The resignation, submitted to President Droupadi Murmu, took immediate effect under Article 67(a) of the Constitution of India.
In his resignation letter, Dhankhar, 72, stated, “To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately.”
The announcement came on the opening day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, prompting reactions from across the political spectrum. As Vice President, Dhankhar also served as the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. During his tenure, he was widely regarded for maintaining procedural integrity and encouraging constructive parliamentary debate.
In a heartfelt message, Dhankhar expressed deep appreciation for President Murmu’s “unwavering support” and a “wonderfully harmonious working relationship.” He also extended his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Council of Ministers, acknowledging their “invaluable cooperation and support.”
Reflecting on his time in office, Dhankhar called it an honour to serve during a time of “Bharat’s global rise and phenomenal achievements.” He praised the trust and warmth shown by Members of Parliament, calling those moments “cherished memories.”
Appointed as the 14th Vice President in 2022, Dhankhar previously served as the Governor of West Bengal and had a long-standing career in law and public service.
