Scindia Calls Northeast the Torchbearer of Sustainable Fashion, Unveils Revival Roadmap for Handloom Sector

Kohima, July 23: Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, on Tuesday underscored the immense potential of the Northeast in driving India’s sustainable fashion movement, calling the region a “torchbearer” of eco-conscious textile and handicraft innovation.

Speaking at a high-level task force meeting chaired by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, Scindia highlighted the need to harness the Northeast’s traditional knowledge and artisanal excellence to lead the country’s handloom and handicrafts revival. The meeting saw participation from key stakeholders, including Union Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma, Assam Minister for Handloom & Textiles Urkhao Gwra Brahma, and senior officials from Manipur and the Ministry of DoNER.

Aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Fashion for Environment and Empowerment,” Scindia emphasized that the Northeast’s eco-friendly practices, rooted in its cultural heritage, can generate sustainable livelihoods and position Indian craftsmanship on the global stage.

“The Northeast must leverage its heritage to foster innovation, empower artisans, and turn our cultural identity into a global brand,” said Scindia.

Union Minister Giriraj Singh assured full support from the Ministry of Textiles, stating that all inputs from the Northeastern states will be implemented in a coordinated and committed manner to ensure global recognition for the region’s traditional crafts.

The task force unveiled a comprehensive roadmap focused on market access, skill development, technology integration, and sustainable livelihood creation. Key initiatives announced include the formation of artisan clusters, establishment of Common Facility Centres, branding of flagship products, and aligning Self-Help Groups (SHGs) with global standards to enhance competitiveness.

The meeting marks a significant step towards transforming the Northeast’s craft sector into a driver of inclusive, sustainable economic growth while preserving its unique cultural identity.
