Dimapur, August 12: The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF), along with its Inner Line Regulation Commission (ILRC), has urged the Nagaland government to immediately cancel Inner Line Permits (ILPs) issued to residents of Assam districts currently undergoing eviction drives.
In a memorandum to Nagaland Chief Secretary, the NSF cited the large-scale eviction operation launched on July 29 in Assam’s Rengma Reserve Forest, Uriamghat area of Golaghat district, which targeted over 11,000 bighas of encroached forest land. The drive, close to the Nagaland border, has displaced numerous families, reportedly of Bengali-speaking Muslim origin from central Assam districts.
The federation warned that displaced individuals might attempt to enter Nagaland by securing ILPs, potentially undermining the purpose of the regulation and threatening the state’s cultural and demographic balance. It said advisories had already been issued to Nagaland’s border districts about the possible influx of evictees.
Key Demands of the NSF:
- Immediate cancellation of all ILPs issued to people from eviction-affected Assam districts since July 29, 2025.
- Retroactive nullification of ILPs issued after that date to prevent loopholes.
- Suspension of fresh ILP issuance to residents of these districts until stability is restored and verification completed.
- Coordination with Assam authorities to share verified data on displaced persons.
The NSF affirmed its readiness to assist the government in enforcement through awareness drives, verification processes, and community coordination, stressing that proactive measures were vital to safeguard Nagaland’s demographic integrity during the current crisis.
