New Delhi, August 19: The Lok Sabha on Tuesday passed the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025, paving the way for the establishment of an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Guwahati. The Union government will provide ₹550 crore in capital support for the project, which is part of Assam’s Special Development Package (SDP).
The new institute will be the second IIM in the Northeast after Shillong and will be declared an institution of national importance. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan tabled the bill, which was cleared by a voice vote despite protests by the Opposition over the issue of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar.
Officials said the Centre, the Assam government, and representatives of the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) had earlier signed a Memorandum of Settlement (MoS), which included the IIM Guwahati project as a key step toward strengthening higher education and all-round development in the state.
At present, there are 21 IIMs across the country with national importance status. Until the first Board of IIM Guwahati is constituted under the Act, its powers and functions will be exercised by persons directed by the central government.
The Assam government had formally requested the setting up of an IIM in Guwahati, citing the state’s strategic location and its role in advancing educational and economic growth in the region.
