Aizawl, August 23: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate Mizoram’s first railway link — the Bairabi–Sairang railway line — on September 13, Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced on Friday.
The 51.38-km-long line, hailed as an engineering marvel, will bring the state capital Aizawl onto India’s railway map for the first time. Sairang, located just 20 km from Aizawl, will serve as the gateway station.
The project, built under the Centre’s Act East Policy to enhance connectivity and economic integration across the Northeast, features 48 tunnels stretching a total of 12.8 km, 55 major bridges, and 87 minor bridges. Among them, Bridge No. 196 stands at 104 metres, making it taller than Delhi’s iconic Qutub Minar.
According to Lalduhoma, the Sairang railway station will be upgraded into a world-class facility, with Rajdhani Express services expected to operate in the near future. “This historic project will connect Aizawl with Assam’s Silchar and further with the rest of the country, fully integrating Mizoram into the national railway network,” the CM said at a conference of the Mizoram Police Service Association (MPSA).
The Prime Minister will arrive in Aizawl on September 12 and stay overnight before formally inaugurating the railway line the next day. Ahead of his visit, Lalduhoma has held discussions with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw regarding the event.
Before coming to Mizoram, Modi is scheduled to visit Assam on September 8 to launch the year-long centenary celebrations of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika and dedicate India’s first bio-ethanol plant at Numaligarh in Golaghat district.
