Imphal, August 28: Inner Manipur MP Dr. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam has sharply criticised the People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) over its recently released tribunal report on the ongoing Manipur conflict, describing it as “biased, insensitive, and an attempt to malign the Meitei community.”

In a strongly worded letter addressed to PUCL president Kavita Srivastava, the Congress MP alleged that the report was built on “prejudiced narratives” rooted in “racist Orientalism” which unfairly demonised the Meitei community while ignoring the complex realities of the crisis.

“The report is insensitive to the suffering of thousands, biased in its approach, and designed to portray one community as perpetrators while disregarding the larger context. This is nothing but an attempt to malign the Meiteis,” Dr. Akoijam asserted.

He further warned that such publications not only lack balance but also risk deepening social divisions in the strife-hit state. Urging PUCL to act responsibly, the MP demanded the immediate withdrawal of the report and an unconditional apology, cautioning that its findings “could fuel mistrust and further disturb the fragile peace process.”

Highlighting the national and international ramifications of such documents, Dr. Akoijam stressed that rights groups must ensure accountability and inclusivity in their fact-finding efforts. “Civil society organisations should not become vehicles of misinformation but should strive to present a balanced and comprehensive picture,” he said.

The PUCL report, which alleged targeted violence and human rights violations during the Manipur unrest, has already faced criticism from several civil society sections in the state.
