Guwahati, August 28: The Centre has announced the release of a ₹100 commemorative silver coin to mark the birth centenary of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, the legendary singer, lyricist, and cultural icon fondly known as the “Bard of the Brahmaputra.”
According to a gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Finance, the coin will be circular with a 44 mm diameter, 200 serrations on the edge, and composed of 99.9% pure silver. It will weigh 40 grams, with a permissible variation of 0.005 grams.
Welcoming the decision, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hailed the move as “a timeless recognition for Dr. Bhupen Hazarika” and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for making the centenary celebrations more memorable.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal described the coin as a “Bridge of Harmony between the Ganga and the Luit,” symbolising the nation’s gratitude to Hazarika. “This gesture will not only keep Bhupen da’s memories alive but also inspire the nation to celebrate his immense contributions,” he said.
The year-long centenary celebrations are scheduled to begin in Assam on September 8. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the state on September 13-14 to participate in the commemorative events.
